A very large percentage of people were legitimately unaware of the history of the ACNA and its policies about women/sexual minorities, until the clergy started talking about it as a preface to why they felt at odds with the denomination. It seems as though many folks came to Anglicanism to heal the wounds they received in evangelical churches, stumbled into a welcoming and loving parish, and never gave it a second thought. It would be very easy to assume we were in an affirming denomination, because there are numerous openly LGBTQ folks around the church who are valued and beloved members of the community.
