the modern English liturgy is clueless about the wedding ring:  ‘I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage.’  Whether at a coronation or a wedding, if you have to say that something is a symbol and a sign, it is not a very good symbol and it fails to signify.  ‘With this ring I thee wed,’ says nothing about a symbol but actually symbolizes.  ‘This is a symbol’ merely asserts something that is not in fact the case.
